ABOUT OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

The Office of the President of the Republic of South Sudan stands as the highest executive authority of the State. Established under Article 97 of the Transitional Constitution, the President serves as Head of State and Head of Government, providing unified leadership to the National Executive and guiding the nation’s governance agenda.

Upon assuming office, the President takes a solemn constitutional oath to obey, preserve, and defend the Constitution, promote unity among the people, strengthen democratic governance, and advance the welfare and dignity of all citizens. This oath reflects the Government’s commitment to national cohesion, development, and responsible leadership .

In accordance with Article 101, the President leads the country through decisive executive action. The Office supervises constitutional and executive institutions, presides over the National Council of Ministers, appoints constitutional and judicial office holders, and provides direction in public affairs. Through these responsibilities, the Office ensures coordinated service delivery, institutional stability, and effective implementation of national policies .

The Office of the President carries primary responsibility for preserving national security and protecting the territorial integrity of South Sudan. It also guides the legislative process by initiating constitutional amendments and legislation, and by assenting to laws passed by the National Legislature, reinforcing constitutional order and good governance across the Republic .

Under Article 101, the President represents both Government and citizens at national, regional, and international levels. The Office directs foreign policy, appoints ambassadors, accepts foreign credentials, and ratifies treaties and international agreements with approval of the National Legislative Assembly. These functions strengthen South Sudan’s diplomatic presence and promote constructive engagement with global partners .

Through its constitutional mandate, the Office of the President remains central to national leadership, unity, and progress. It works to strengthen public institutions, promote peace and stability, and advance development priorities in line with the aspirations of the people. Guided by Articles 97 and 101 of the Transitional Constitution, the Office continues to steer South Sudan toward stability, inclusive governance, and sustained national growth.
